Following a career that spanned nearly four decades with The Co-operators Group Ltd., Kathy stepped down from her role as President and Chief Executive Officer in 2016. She began her career at Co-operators as an underwriting supervisor, rising through the ranks of management to executive leadership roles including Region Vice President of Co-operators General Insurance Company, Chief Operating Officer of L’Union Canadienne, and Chief Operating Officer of Sovereign General Insurance Company before her appointment as President and CEO of The Co-operators Group in 2002.
Very active in the cooperative and mutual insurance movement over the years, as well as in her local community, Kathy held professional board and voluntary roles with a wide range of organizations including: the International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation, the International Cooperative Alliance, the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction, the Canadian Council of Chief Executives, the United Nations Inquiry into a Sustainable Financial System, the University of Guelph, the Burlington Economic Development Corporation, the Conference Board of Canada, Addenda Capital, and The Co-operators Group Ltd. She is immediate past Chair of the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction, the International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation, and the CUMIS Group Limited boards, and holds director roles with the International Cooperative Alliance and Metrolinx. Kathy holds a Bachelor of Science (Math) from the University of Manitoba and a MBA (Marketing) from McMaster University. She was appointed Honorary Chartered Insurance Professional with the Insurance Institute of Canada. She brings extensive board experience, along with profit and loss experience and wide-ranging knowledge of operations, distribution, information technology, and marketing within a purpose-driven organization as a former CEO.
Kathy lives with her husband Bernie Mutter in Burlington, Ontario. They have 4 boys.
