Halifax student receives Foresters academic scholarship
Sir John A. Macdonald high school grad to attend Saint Mary's University
Toronto, ON June 11, 2009 Halifax-area student, Robert Shea from Upper Tantallon, will receive up to $8,000 through a Foresters Competitive Scholarship1 for demonstrating academic excellence, leadership qualities and volunteerism cornerstones of Foresters values. Robert, who graduates this June from Sir John A. Macdonald High School, plans to attend Saint Mary's University in September to pursue a bachelor's degree in business.
Foresters, a member-based life insurance provider with members throughout Nova Scotia, has invested in the futures of more than 4,400 students over the past 25 years. The Foresters Competitive Scholarship program supports Foresters mission to champion the well-being of families by providing quality life insurance, unique member benefits and inspiring community activities.
"I've always been an active volunteer and really enjoy participating in community events. To receive a scholarship in recognition of that and my hard work at school is amazing," said Robert Shea. "This scholarship is a huge financial stress reliever and will make my transition to university much smoother."
An athlete who participated in most school sports, Robert also made time to volunteer with a minor league hockey team, the Lion's Club's Christmas Tree Charity, a program to clean beaches and the St. Margaret's Sailing Club. Robert will also be volunteering his time for an upcoming Foresters playground building project in Purcell's Cove on June 17.

The Foresters Competitive Scholarship Program is available to members and their dependent children in Canada and the United States. The scholarship is also available to members who are currently enrolled as mature students over 25 years of age and to those attending undergraduate university, vocational college or trade school.
The successful scholarship recipient is awarded $2,000 for up to four years or until their first degree is obtained. A Foresters grant can help pay for tuition, books, supplies, residence, clothes, food or other expenses.
