Scholarships
Mike Jones, age 18, has fond memories of attending Foresters Annual Christmas Party as a child. Now, as a young adult, his memories continue to grow as he begins his freshman year at university – with help from Foresters. Mike is one of this year's Competitive Scholarship award winners.

"My father informed me about the scholarship and suggested I apply," he says. "Even though I put money aside, it's always great to get some extra help and it seemed like a really fair scholarship."

"The Competitive Scholarship was a major factor in becoming a member," says James, Mike's father. "All the benefits of membership are valuable, but I thought the scholarship would be good in helping to prepare for Mike's future education."

Mike is currently studying Life Sciences at the University of Toronto, with a focus on chemistry. After completing his undergraduate degree, he hopes to pursue a career in medicine or pharmacology.

One of the main application criteria for the scholarship is community service, which he undertook with little hesitation. A first-time volunteer, he found it easy to meet the requirements.

"It wasn't difficult to achieve the hours," he says. "Every time I saw there was a need to help out, whether selling tickets at my parents' band performances, or helping out at the local public school, I just set aside the time and had fun with whatever I was doing."

Now, between classes and mid-terms, he remains active in many clubs and continues his volunteerism at school, with the Cancer Awareness Society.

Tuition fees and associated costs are on the rise. Even though Mike had put money aside, the scholarship has helped take the edge off tuition costs – and pay for many of the expensive books he requires for his courses.

Says Mike's father, "The more education people have, the better for them and society as a whole. It is fantastic Foresters recognizes the importance of education and encourages higher learning by providing scholarships."
