What you need to know about the Foresters Competitive Scholarship application

Award Details
Scholarship recipients will be selected from the completed applications submitted before the deadline date. This program is administered by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC).
There are 350 Foresters Competitive Scholarships available, including up to five Ken Peterson Awards for Community Service. The Ken Peterson Award is in special recognition of applicants who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and extraordinary effort and ability to overcome adversity.

Membership Requirements
Eligible applicants are:
Foresters members and their spouses
Dependent children of a Foresters member: aged 25 years or under; biological or legally-adopted
Eligibility Requirements
Grades
Eligible spouse, dependent child or Foresters member must have:

Undergraduate studies: minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in the last academic year of study before the first academic year of the award
| Undergraduate studies: minimum average of 75% (Canadian tens scale) in the last year of study before the year of the award |
| Diploma studies: minimum GPA of 2.5 in the last year of study before the year of the award
| Diploma studies: minimum average of 65% in the last year of study before the year of the award |
Mature students (as defined by the attending institution)
Academic eligibility for the entrance level is based on proof of registration at an eligible institution. Proof of registration will be required if the candidate is awarded the scholarship.
Community Service
All applicants must have performed a minimum of 40 hours of community service in the two years prior to application.
Community service is volunteering for any recognized community organization (e.g. Boys & Girls Club, Lions Club, Girl Guides, sports camps, school or religious institution, etc).
References
All applicants must provide a reference letter from a person (not related to the applicant) that is familiar with your community service. Refer to the letter of reference guidelines available with the application, for specific details.
All applicants must provide a 250-word essay outlining why community service is important to them.
Enrolment
Eligible course of study must meet the following criteria:
- Full-time enrolment
- Minimum 2-year program, not including co-op time
- Canadian and American educational institutions with recognized degree/diploma-granting powers, excluding university preparatory programs, e.g., CEGEPs/pre-university diplomas
Eligibility Restrictions
- Applicants who have previously received a Foresters Competitive Scholarship will not be eligible to apply for a new scholarship.
- Foresters membership must be in effect on the date of application for a Foresters Competitive Scholarship and it must still be in effect in order for the applicant to accept the scholarship.
- If the member dies after the scholarship is awarded to a spouse or dependent child, the scholarship will continue up to its maximum duration as long as the recipient continues to meet the renewal criteria.
- The scholarship will terminate at the end of any academic year in which the Foresters member, whether the scholarship recipient or the sponsoring member, ceases to be a member of Foresters.
Applying Online
During the application period use the online site at www.aucc.ca to apply for the Foresters Competitive Scholarship. The Important Dates section (above) outlines the submission deadline for the next academic year.
Once you have submitted your application online, you can use the site to track the status of your application and your supporting documents. You are responsible for making sure that your application and documents are received successfully at AUCC.

Evaluation Process
The selection of the scholarship recipients is solely within the discretion of the Selection Committee, composed of Canadian and U.S. university and college representatives chosen by the AUCC.
- The Selection Committee takes note of balanced geographical representation.
- Selection Committee decisions are final and binding.
- Foresters exercises no influence in the selection of scholarship recipients or in the adjudication process
Foresters Competitive Scholarship Recipients
Acceptance
If you are a NEW Foresters Scholarship recipient, you must do the following to receive your scholarship:
- Return the signed Award Acceptance Form.
- Send proof of registration in a full-time program of study at an eligible institution.
- Use the scholarship in the academic year it is awarded; OR
- Make a formal request to have your scholarship deferred.
Payment
AUCC will forward payment of the scholarship to the educational institution on behalf of Foresters. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that payment of tuition fees is made according to the requirements of the educational institution, regardless of the timing of the award payment.
Deferral
A Foresters Competitive Scholarship can be deferred for a total of 2 semesters (unless otherwise noted) and only for the following reasons:
- Co-op studies
- Illness
- Death in the family
- Vocational obligation (can be for 4 semesters)
- Humanitarian mission
Once you have been informed that your application for a Foresters Competitive Scholarship was successful, you will need to make a formal, written application outlining the circumstances that make a deferral necessary. At the discretion of the AUCC, you may be asked to provide proof of circumstances.
Renewal
If you wish to renew your scholarship in subsequent years, the eligibility requirements are as follows:
- Maintain a full-time course of study
- Remain in good academic standing as defined by the educational institution
- Maintain Foresters membership
You must complete and return the Renewal Report sent to you by the AUCC each spring. The Renewal Report must be signed by the student, and signed and stamped by the institution.
