Orphan Scholarship
Foresters helps to ensure that a child’s opportunity for higher learning is not jeopardized upon the death of a parent.
Benefit Description
Children of a deceased parent are provided with a renewable scholarship for a maximum
of four consecutive years or until the first degree is obtained, whichever is earlier, to help
cover tuition and maintenance.

Except for the single parent scholarship, both parents must have been alive at the date of application for membership.
Eligibility requirements and limitations
- Available to those members with
certificates of face value greater than or equal to $10,000 or if
an annuity certificate it has a value of not less than $10,000 or
premium of $1,000 paid in the past year.
- At the time of the parent’s death, the
surviving spouse or legal guardian must register the child for
this benefit.
- No benefit will be paid as a result of the
death of a parent due to a disease, sign or symptom related to it
that manifested prior to or within 24 months of the date of
application for membership. For this purpose, disease shall be
defined to include acquired immune deficiency syndrome and a
diagnosis of HIV Positive status.
- In the event of an accidental death, the
benefit eligibility begins at the time of becoming an eligible
member.
- The program must be full-time, meaning at
least one month in duration, with a minimum of 12 hours of
supervised work in the program per week.
- Applicants must attend American or Canadian educational institutions that have recognized degree/diploma-granting powers (university preparatory programs, e.g., CEGEP/pre-university diploma, in any jurisdiction are not eligible).
- The duration of the scholarship and the
amount of assistance will be at the sole discretion of Foresters.
- The scholarship will end and no further
payments will be made if, at any time, the child’s scholastic
progress is not satisfactory in the opinion of Foresters or the
child does not attend full-time.
- If the child becomes orphaned at age 18 or
younger, the program must begin in the calendar year in which the
child’s high school education is completed.
- If the child becomes orphaned after age 18
and prior to reaching age 24, he/she must already be attending a
program.
- The scholarship benefit is not available
to a child who becomes orphaned after reaching age 24.
- The scholarship will not be granted for
evening or part-time studies.
- Upon completion of the approved program,
the scholarship will end.
- The scholarship is renewable each year and the recipient must comply with the the renewal criteria
