Sharon Giffen, FSA, FCIA, MAAA
Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Sharon Giffen joined ForestersTM in 2000 as Vice President, Product Management. In 2001, she was named Vice President, Actuarial, and then appointed interim Vice President, Marketing in 2005. In 2006, Sharon was appointed Senior Vice President and Chief Actuary. As of July 2009, Sharon's new role as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, expanded to include finance, audit, risk and investment.
For more than 25 years, Sharon has worked in the life insurance business, including Vice President roles at Ernst & Young and at Swiss Life and Health Reinsurance. She has also held management positions at National Life, Manulife Financial and Maritime Life. The majority of her roles have focused on development and marketing of life insurance products in Canada and the U.S.
After graduating from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Mathematics (Honors Co-op), Sharon became a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries. She is a past president of each of the Actuaries Club of Toronto and the Actuaries Section of the National Fraternal Congress of America. Sharon is a member of the Society of Actuaries' Committee on Life Insurance Company Expenses and serves as Secretary/Treasurer of the Smaller Insurance Companies Section of the Society of Actuaries. She has spoken and moderated sessions at meetings of the Society of Actuaries, the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and other industry organizations. Sharon has written articles that were published in the Society of Actuaries Section newsletters. Sharon was also active for many years in the Examination Committee of the Society of Actuaries and has been a moderator for a Chartered Life Underwriter course.
